It's that sameness that brings comfort, brings security. When we're ready to 'spice things up a bit' we buy a new pair of 'jammies, we redecorate the family room, or we buy a new 'favorite' chair. For many of us, getting to the place where we are ready to toss out the familiar for the new takes some getting used to. We may shop for a while, try on things to see how they feel, and then race back to the old stand-bys until we find that thing that is, as Momma Bear said, "Just right."
The chair however goes far further back than Latin however, the Egyptians having created some highly ornamental chairs for their pharaohs, while the Ancient Greeks way back in 1400BC were building chairs with four sturdy wooden legs, their design, the klismos being adopted by the Romans who introduced it in all the territories they conquered.
The church and the chair have an even deeper connection, as the word "chair" derives from the Latin "cathedra", the connection being the designation of a church that was the "seat" of a bishop as a cathedral.
The back of the chair is dubbed as a splat, which resembles a wood panel that's carved to fit the curve of the back perfectly. The splat is usually carved and decorated to resemble vases, while side arches provide support to the intricate center piece. Created in different varieties, the Queen Anne chair can also be a small sofa, a dining room chair, a corner chair, a tea-table chair, a slipper chair, or even an office chair, depending on the preferences of the manufacturer.
