Because of its design, the ergonomic kneeling chair allows the person sitting in the chair a previously unseen freedom of movement in furniture. One-at-a-time, the feet can be alternately placed on the ground to provide a stretch to the hamstrings. In this position, one knee remains on the kneeling chair's shin pad while the other leg extends with minimal bend to the knee. This hamstring stretch releases not only the leg muscles but also the hips, which ultimately result in back pain. Also, a foot can be placed on the shin pad to get an effective stretch to the backs of the hips and IT band. A rolling ergonomic chair allows for an accentuation of these stretches as the 360 degree mobility will allow for more stretching intensity and more angles of stretching. The sitter can exercise lateral stretching by swiveling the chair either to the left or right, giving relief and extension to the side ribs and oblique muscles. This mobile freedom gives the chair an advanced approach to ergonomic health.
Lift chairs are also designed to help individuals go up stairs. These are very common in older buildings. However, newer buildings are starting to include them in the event of an emergency when the elevators can't be used.
