Lift chairs are commonly used in businesses for individuals who do not have to use a wheelchair, but have difficulty walking up stairs or inclines. These generally have a chair at the base that the individual sits in. They then use the controls to move up or down the lift. The chair moves slowly, but it a great alternative for those who find the stairs to be very difficult to conquer.
Through basic experimentation, these masterpieces were created. Sculptor and Artist Harry Bertoia was experimenting with form and space. He wanted to create works of art, or sculptures, that were functional as well eye pleasing. By using the concept of bending metal into functional art, a completely new style of furniture was created.
Chairs are functional by their very nature, but in the hands of a master designer, they can transcend to the realm of art as well. The Bertoia Chair is a prime example. Harry Bertoia was an Italian designer whose early efforts in the 1950's mid century design movement has spawned a line of furniture that remains popular today.
One of the most functional pieces of furniture is the humble folding chair. The folding chair is easy to store, durable and easily transportable. One of the only problems with directors chairs is there nasty aesthetic reputation probably because they are often left to brave the outdoor elements. In my areas of Sydney I often see directors chairs and folding chairs on the rubbish pile for collection - not because they are broken but usually because they are faded, dirty, and depressingly bedraggled!
